Laurea summa cum laude in Medicine and Surgery at the University of Bologna in 1988. Postgraduate Schools in Internal Medicine and in Gastroenterology and Digestive Endoscopy.

From 1990 to 1993 clinical and research Fellow at the Gastroenterology and Liver Transplantation Departments of the University of Pittsburgh (USA).

Associate Professor of Internal Medicine from 2000 to 2010.

Since 2011 full Professor of Gastroenterology and Director of the postgraduate program in Gastroenterology and Digestive Endoscopy at the Catholic University of Rome.

President of the Italian Foundation for Research in Hepatology (FIRE) from 2008 to 2012.

Member of the council of the the European Helicobacter and Microbiota Study Group (EHMSG) and of the European Association of Gastroenterology Endoscopy and Nutrition (EAGEN) and of several national and international Scientific Societies.

Member of the editorial board of several national and international Scientific Journals. Editor of the journal European Review of Medical and Pharmacological Sciences.
Research interests:

His fields of interests are: Irritable Bowel Syndrome and Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Helicobacter related diseases, Gut Microbiome and Metabolome, acute and chronic Liver insufficiency, viral hepatitis, NAFLD/NASH, hepatocellular carcinoma and Liver transplantation, celiac disease and intestinal malabsorption, pancreatic disease.

Invited for lectures in more than 450 national and international Universities and Institutions.

Author of more than 900 full papers on indexed Scientific Journals and of more than 7000 abstracts presented at National and International Meetings.
